I'm back in a writing class with Vanessa, graduate of Sarah Lawrence. It's a two Saturday class about how to tell the truth or whether to tell the truth or lie in our writing. Here is something I wrote for the class. We had several prompts, including these:
- Write down five lies you've told.
- Write down five lies you've been told.
- Write a poem based on one of the lies by making it a truth.
Below is a poem about one of the lies I've told, the lie "I'm fine."
Poem about a Lie
I am not fine.
The windows need washing.
The lawn is producing seed.
The dog is sneezing again.
And the dead are still dead.
I am not okay.
No matter how much
you desire it. No
matter
how much discomfort they
feel. No matter how
much
I want to be.
I am waiting.
For “things to get better.”
For this house to be home.
For love’s impossible return.
